Memorable trip to the Carpets Fiesta, Elche de en Sarria – June 2025

On June 19th, 2025, 27 of us were warmly greeted by Pepe, our favourite bus driver, who picked us up in Moraira at the very civilized hour of 10 a.m. We set off on our journey, with Almansa as our first stop. Almansa served primarily as a lunch break destination on our way to Ayna, where we would stay for three nights at Hotel Felipe II.
The location of the hotel was utterly stunning, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. While the hotel itself left a bit to be desired, it was clean, and the staff were incredibly friendly. Finding hotels for a group during this particular fiesta is always challenging, as it typically attracts upwards of 12,000 attendees.

Day 2: Exploring Elche de la Sierra
The next day, we visited Elche de la Sierra the home of the carpet festival where we explored the fascinating Carpet Museum. Pablo, our guide, gave us an insightful and engaging tour, leaving everyone captivated by the beauty and craftsmanship of the carpets. After the museum, we wandered through the town and enjoyed a lovely lunch before returning to the hotel. Day 3: Albacete and Liétor Adventures
On the third day, we ventured to Albacete. Some of the group visited the famous knife factory, while others explored the charming old shopping arcade. We were fortunate enough to witness a Spanish wedding at the Cathedral, which was a truly beautiful experience.
Lunch that day was at Restaurante L’Arruzz, a modern eatery where the main course, as the name suggests, was a selection of paellas. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

After lunch, we hopped back on the bus and headed to the picturesque village of Liétor, a hidden gem that most travellers would never stumble upon unless guided. Having visited before, Ray and I knew its treasures and it was a delight to share them with the group.
In the afternoon, we travelled to Liétor, a hidden gem with much to offer. Our first stop was the beautiful Ermita, a 16th-century structure adorned with captivating wall paintings, possibly created by a friar. We also visited a natural spring and a second church, before being surprised by a sudden Spanish downpour. Our day concluded with a visit to the Carmelite church and convent, where we viewed mummified remains in the crypt and marvelled at the historic ‘lavanderia’ next door.
Next, we visited a natural spring that has been transformed into a drinking and watering trough. While there, we briefly encountered the President of La Mancha, though we didn’t have the chance to meet him personally.
Day 4: Sawdust Carpets and Farewell
The following morning, we departed at the early hour of 6:45 a.m. to ensure we arrived in Elche de la Sierra in good time. What awaited us was nothing short of spectacular. Truly a great experience! Magnificent carpets made of sawdust, wood shavings, and sand. The craftsmanship and artistry were awe-inspiring, and some of the group even voted for their favourite designs, though it was no easy task to choose.
During our visit, we went to the Church service which was for Corpus Christi. The first holy communion children were there to take part in the procession. They made their first communion in May. We watched as much as possible before departing at midday to head back to Moraira.
Everyone agreed that it had been an incredible trip. For those who have never experienced this extraordinary fiesta, it’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime treat.
