The Ashington Group began in the 1930s as an evening class of pitmen in an isolated village in Northumberland, drawn together in their spare time to learn a little about art. They were soon producing their own work and within a few years their paintings amounted to a complete record of life in a mining community. They met weekly through to the 1980s, by which time their work had been recognised as unique.
