Minutes of the Monthly Meeting held on
6 January 2020 at Salon G.L., Teulada
at 11:00
It is confirmed that the President and the Secretary attended the meeting as voted in at the AGM on 4 March 2020.
David Haxon, the President, welcomed all the members to the meeting especially the 50 new members. He confirmed the usual security checks had been made, pointed out the emergency exits and asked for mobile phones to be switched off.
Prue Jackson read out the synopsis of the minutes of the meeting on 2 December 2019. The full minutes had been put on the U3A website and were proposed by Colin McNae, seconded by Ray Guise-Smith and approved by the members with a show of hands.
Presidents Address
David wished everybody a Happy New Year and welcomed all to the first meeting of 2020. He gave a special thank you to Pat Clarke, the Membership Secretary, for all the preparation involved for all the renewal dates as well as her very willing helpers. David then reported the loss of one of the U3A Moraira-Teulada founder members, Gordon Kershaw, who would be sadly missed. The chosen Charity for 2019 was Alzheimer’s with the sum of € 3,000 being raised. For 2020 MABS is the Charity for the U3A, details of events will be announced in due course. David finally appealed for volunteers to come forward to fill Committee positions, especially those that have become vacant.
Reports
Treasurer – Graham gave the opening balance of the U3A account as €9,427.90 and after income, expenses and accruals the closing balance was €229.46. The opening balance for the Travel account was €9,028.66 and after income, expenses and accruals the closing balance was €288.31. Both reports will be on the website.
Group Coordinator – Lynn said it had been a quiet time for the Groups, during the Christmas period, but could announce the gentle Walking Group had started. She went on to re-iterate what David had said about the need for volunteers to take up Committee positions adding that the Committee is not a ‘closed shop’ as always open for help. Lynn then introduced David Kelly, the Walking Football Group leader who explained that the Group was for anyone who wishes to still be active and keep fit. He suggested anyone who is even slightly interested, to come to one of the sessions, held at the Padel Tennis court, Thursdays from 10:30 to 12:00. Competitions are held in May with teams from various towns in the area.
Travel Group – Lynn said there were a few places left for the Benidorm Palace trip. Places still for the Andorra /Costa Brava trip and a new trip is planned for Teruel, Albaracin and Cuenca on 2 June a 3 day, 2 night trip. Lynn also reminded members of the suggestion ‘box’ to be found near the Travel desk.
Committee/Membership Liaison – No queries had been received from members so Steve hoped everybody was happy. However, if anyone wanted to discussed a problem, please to contact him.
Cultural Arts – Hugh gave brief details of coming events with full details of all dates etc. on the Website. Live transmissions from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, continue to be broadcast directly to Calpe, Alfaz del Pi and Denia. Starting with Sleeping Beauty on 16 January 2020. 15 to 18 January Careline Theatre presents Goldilocks and the Three Bears in Alcalali. 27 January to 1 February Javea Players present two great men who shook the world – Churchill and Einstein at the Javea Players Studio Theatre.
Nothing arising from the reports and no other business.
There was no speaker for the meeting, so the raffle was drawn and the winning ticket 188 was held by Richard Jones who won a voucher for Carrefour.
